Fluent in French, excelling in academics, and tearing it up on the soccer and lacrosse fields, Hugo Baring proves he’s a force to be reckoned with as he enters the second semester of his sophomore year. Though Baring has been at LGHS for the entirety of his high school career, he is not a Los Gatos native; Baring grew up in New York and lived there for 11 years. He described the differences between the two places saying, “I prefer New York. I mean, I feel like the people here are better, but I used to have more individuality in New York.”

Baring exudes his great athleticism through his participation in school soccer and lacrosse, as well as club soccer. In both sports, he plays midfield. When asked how he got into the two different sports, the dual athlete responded, “My dad loves soccer. I [have] played since I was three years old. And then I had a lacrosse stick, so I just started playing.” Baring has collected many great memories over the years from both sports. When asked about his favorite, Baring shared, “My team and I went to nationals in Denver, we were hanging out in one kid’s room and it was super loud and we all got kicked out of the hotel.”

While Baring harbors an impressive number of accomplishments, his academic and athletic journeys have not been without adversity. He said, “I always struggle with my confidence in soccer and in lacrosse, and my dad helped me with that.” This family-oriented attitude also comes across in the origins of his fluency in French. Acknowledging that being fluent in a second language, Baring describes the origins of this ability saying, “My mom is French, and I attended a French school in New York.” He showcases this skill in French 4 Honors at LGHS. In his English Honors class, they have just started the Plato Project where Hugo demonstrates his creativity and kindness. He will be creating a picture book specializing in helping dyslexic kids to read.

When he’s not playing soccer or lacrosse you can find Baring fishing with his friends, skiing, or volunteering at House of Hope. Over December break, Baring went to the Palisades in Tahoe with his family where he went skiing with his family.

While Baring will undoubtedly have a plethora of opportunities when it comes to his future, he wants to pursue a career in business or economics at a college on the east coast. Keep an eye out for the sophomore on the soccer or lacrosse fields and in his honors classes because you don’t want to miss the great things he is going to accomplish.
